Bridgwater & Taunton Canal

The well-maintained towpath and interesting lock structures of the Bridgwater and Taunton Canal make for idyllic walking and peaceful boating.

The 14 mile Bridgwater and Taunton Canal opened in 1827, linking the River Tone and the River Parrett for commercial traffic between the two market towns.

There is no navigable connection to the River Parrett today but the Canal is enjoyed by walkers, cyclists, nature enthusiasts, fishermen and boatmen alike. The majority of the Canal is rural and offers tranquility to all.

The 'Somerset Space Walk' is located on the Canal and features two scale models of the Solar System centred around the sun at Maunsel Lock (also the site of a tea room). Follow the planets' trail to Maunsel Lock from the Brewhouse Theatre in Taunton or from Morrisons' supermarket in Bridgwater.

The Somerset Boat Centre at North Newton offers canoes, kayaks, self-drive motor boats and a chartered narrowboat for exploring this stunning waterway.
