Somerset Coast Walk – Day 1: County Gate to Porlock

Join walkers taking part in the 80 Miles in Eight Days Challenge for a spectacular guided walk along the Somerset coast, travelling from County Gate to Porlock via ancient woodland, dramatic coastal scenery and historic landmarks.
Beginning at County Gate on the Devon and Somerset border, this guided walk follows a spectacular section of the South West Coast Path to Porlock.
The route passes through beautiful woodland, alongside clear streams and waterfalls, with regular views across the Bristol Channel towards the South Wales coast. Along the way, walkers will visit Culbone Church, believed to be the smallest complete parish church in England. Hidden deep within the woodland and accessible only on foot, it is one of Exmoor's most fascinating historic sites.
The walk continues past the former site of Ashley Combe, once home to Ada Byron, daughter of the poet Lord Byron. Traces of the estate can still be seen today, including tunnels that once formed part of its grand Italian gardens.
As the route approaches the coast, walkers descend into the picturesque harbour village of Porlock Weir before continuing through the marshes and onward to the historic village of Porlock, renowned for its traditional cottages and winding streets.
This is a fantastic opportunity to explore one of the most scenic stretches of the Somerset and Exmoor coastline while discovering local history, heritage and wildlife along the way. Please note that dogs are not permitted on this walk.
